1stClass@Number is a mathematics intervention programme here at Ford Primary School. It is led by a specially trained teaching assistant and delivered in 30 half-hour sessions to a group of up to four children, for 12-15 weeks. The programme aims to secure number skills, and results have demonstrated that children make accelerated progress throughout the programme enabling them to access the maths curriculum with greater confidence and understanding. Children continue to take part in their normal class maths lessons during the duration of the programme.
Sessions focus on: number and calculation; developing mathematical understanding; communication and reasoning skills.
A Post Office theme runs throughout, engaging children in real life contexts that are both stimulating and fun. Each topic starts with a simple assessment that helps the teaching assistant to tailor sessions to the children’s needs.
