The Role of the School Governor

The role of the governor in school is crucial in both supporting and challenging the Headteacher, Trust and leadership team.  The best way to describe this would be ~ “A supportive yet critical friend”.

School governors are volunteers.  They work together as a governing body to collectively oversee the development of their school. They work together as a team to make important decisions on how our school will be run and have to stand by their collective decision. Governors do not make decisions individually.

Governors can be parents, grandparents, friends of the school and people nominated by the Local Authority.

Parent governors are usually recruited through a ballot.

Why do we need school governors?

Governors help schools provide the best possible education, thinking and working strategically to raise standards.  They also monitor and evaluate progress, setting school priorities and targets and supporting the Headteacher and staff in meeting and challenging expectations.

What does it entail?

You would be expected to attend two meetings per term: usually on a Tuesday from 5.30pm – 7.00pm as well as making visits to the school in order to speak to the children and staff, support school events and learn more about the way the school works.
