Physical Education

At Ford Primary School, we aim to provide a PE curriculum for pupils from Nursery to Year 6 that promotes enjoyment but also allows them to experience a range of activities that help them to develop their health, fitness and wellbeing.  We intend to offer a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities.  It provides opportunities for pupils to become more confident in a way which supports their health and fitness and help them to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Intent

Through the delivery of PE at Ford Primary School we want to provide the children with a broad and balanced curriculum.  During lessons we encourage the students physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively by providing them with a variety of opportunities across a series of lessons.

The curriculum is designed to be enjoyable and collaborative to encourage pupils to develop their roles within the unit.  The intent of our P.E. delivery is to ensure that all of our pupils understand and develop a secure knowledge of a healthy and active lifestyle whilst exploring a deep range of skills.

At Ford Primary School we promote equal opportunities of learning experiences in games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and outdoor education.  Lessons and units of work are structured to allow pupils to build on their prior knowledge and to enable them to gain knowledge and skills within a physical education environment.

Implementation

Ford Primary School fully adheres to the aims of the National Curriculum for Physical Education to ensure all children; develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities, are physically active for sustained periods of time, engage in competitive sports and activities and lead healthy, active lives.

Every child throughout school has 2 hours of taught PE curriculum per week and we use the Complete PE scheme to provide us with a structured curriculum.  Our medium and long term plans are designed to allow all pupils at Ford Primary School the opportunity to achieve the curriculum aims.  They are adaptable to allow us to meet the complex needs of our pupils and allow them to achieve their full potential in a fully inclusive approach.

PE is a vital part of the curriculum and promotes a healthy lifestyle for all of our children encouraging them to be alert and active.  Children are taught the importance of keeping their bodies healthy and active within PE lessons and take on challenges to build confidence and leadership.

Impact

At Ford Primary School we use summative assessments to determine children’s understanding and inform teachers planning.  By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.

Our delivery of PE has a purposeful and meaningful outcome to encourage social interaction and challenge and provide our children with high-quality opportunities to compete in sport and other activities to build character.

How do we check the impact?

  • Teachers and coaches evaluate sessions to provide increased opportunities for children to take part in intra and inter-school competitions.
  • We track progress and attainment through unit evaluations using WTS, ARE and GDS.

How have staff been supported in this subject?

  • All staff have been supplied with the relevant materials to successfully deliver their PE sessions.
  • PE leaders have attended relevant training to keep up to date with curriculum changes.
  • NQTs have been supported with regular CPD opportunities and relevant support.
