Year 6 Cedar

Cedar Class (Year 6)

Our Spring Term Topic

Our topic for the Spring term is the ‘Incredible Journeys’. Throughout the topic, we will be learning all about a variety of journeys, both fictional and real - many of which originated in Plymouth. This will include learning about the Hobbit, the Titanic, Robert Falcon Scott, Charles Darwin and the places these journeys took in!

Homework

In addition to the work and studies the children undertake at school, there will be a few areas of their learning for which we greatly appreciate your support in reinforcing at home:

It is very important that the children spend approximately 20 minutes each evening reading a range of texts and discussing them with a grown-up. In addition to this, we will continue to provide children with quality reading time in class and they will be encouraged to complete a reading quiz upon completion of their book to further embed the comprehension of what they have read.

Specific Topic, Maths and Literacy homework tasks will be set termly for the child to complete in the order of their choosing. I would recommend that they tackle one piece per week, but as long as each piece has been completed by the Christmas Holidays, you can organise when they are completed yourselves.

Accurate spelling is a vitally important skill for all children to be able to fully unlock their creative writing potential and therefore we will be setting weekly lists of spellings to be learnt and assessed each Friday. The spelling sheet will include a variety of engaging and effective methods which you can do with your child to help secure their understanding of spelling rules and conventions.

All areas of mathematics will be covered throughout this year, and in order for your child to be able to effectively access more advanced concepts and methods, it is essential that they have a firm understanding of times-tables and swift recall of all tables to 12x12. We recommend that your child regularly accesses the ‘Times-Tables Rock Stars’ online resource to learn their tables in a fun and effective manner.

PE

Our PE days this term will be Thursday and Friday and we request that you send your child to school wearing their PE kit on these days. Please be mindful of the weather and be sure to provide either black shorts or tracksuit bottoms, a white t-shirt, trainers and an appropriate sweatshirt.

If you have any questions at all, please let me know.

Kind regards,

Mr Finnimore
